Le 3

After spending another terrific day at Paris Plage (the kids helped out with the giant papier mache sculpture and we tried out the swimming pool, where even Jonah had to wear a speedo), our newly found babysitter, Lily, came over for the evening.

The kids had a wonderful evening with Lily playing, drawing, reading stories, and learning French, while we had a fabulous grown-up evening out.

We went to dinner at Le 3, in the Marais. We arrived at 7:15 and were told the restaurant would not be open for dinner until 8. So, we walked around the neighborhood, checking out the gay bookstores, boutique windows, and student art exhibit in a converted gymnasium gallery. Dinner was fantastic. We sat outside on the terrace. Immediately after we sat down they served us an amuse-bouche of risotto with peppers while we looked at the menu. We both went with the 3 course prix-fixe menu of appetizer, entree, dessert. You're probably not all that interested in what we ate, but since this is our journal too and we want to remember it, I'll bore you with it anyway. Abe started with a mesclun salad with pearl onions, artichoke hearts, and crispy toasts with herbed cream cheese, then had a mackerel filet served with a vegetable flan (which was much more delicious than it sounds), and for dessert, a strawberry granita . He also had a little cup of strong coffee served with a chocolate covered almond. Dara had an amazingly fresh gazpacho, lamb with a potato artichoke side dish, and a chocolate souffle with vanilla ice cream. By very odd coincidence, we saw one of the 2 people we know in Paris (our pediatrician) at the restaurant as well.

Paris is beautiful and romantic at night. The sidewalks are crowded with people going out to dinner and cafes. You can see inside the restaurants and places that are too dark to see inside of during the day. We should get a babysitter more often!

That is FABULOUS about your date night. Did you have to check references for your sitter? Did you have to do this in french?

I am hoping and praying the vegetable flan tastes better than it sounds.

We did check reference in French! Needless to say, it was a fairly rudimentary interview, but the referee has only glowing things to say about Lily, and she turned out to be right.

You'll have to come with us the next time to try the vegetable flan. It's hard to do it justice in words, but trust me -- yum!
