Family Day

Today being Wednesday, Ella had no school. Then, the kids slept in, and we realized that Jonah wouldn't arrive at school until after 10. Although we are allowed to drop him off any time, it didn't seem worth the trouble. We decided to have a family day instead.

We spent the morning at the Museum of Jewish Art and History. Ella's school has been talking a lot about Christmas, so we thought this might be a good counter-balance. The museum is excellent. The objects are displayed beautifully and are interspersed with photos of "real life Jews" and quotes by each person about what it means to them to be Jewish. They also have nice models of synagogues from around Europe. Abe thought it was the best Jewish museum he had ever seen. It also offers some terrific ateliers, which we hope to take advantage of in the coming months.

In keeping with the theme, we had lunch at Morry's bagel place in the 11th.

After lunch, I had my baking class (including: orange sorbet, saucisson en brioche with a port sauce, tuiles aux amandes, and macaroons), while Abe took both kids swimming. Ella has become an independent enough swimmer that Abe can manage with both kids in the water at once. Ella can float on her back and stomach, swim under water, touch the floor of the pool, and swim forward as far as Abe will let her. They are working on treading water and turning around in the middle of the pool.

Of course, playing all day means we'll need to work late into the night. It's worth it though - as we are in the habit of saying, we can sleep when we get back to Ohio!

One note from earlier in the week: Abe's colleague David Ascalon was in Paris with his wife, Ronit, on vacation (David is working with Abe to design the stained glass windows, torah reading table, and several other artistic details for the synague). We had a great time going out to dinner with them at a local bistro. To top off a fun evening, we got home and found that the babysitter, Emily, had succeeded in getting the kids to sleep!
