Thanksgiving Day

Just a regular day here, but with lots to make note of...

I went to two conferences today. In the morning, I attended a conference on childhood nutrition and physical activity, sponsored by the Danone Institute, the research branch of Danone foods. It was held at the Insitute Oceanographie. The key note speaker (who spoke in English, as he was British) was fabulous, and I heard several other good talks (in French). Danone sponsored a very nice catered lunch, too, with yogurt, but plenty of other things as well. Then, I went to a second conference, for an organization called AFERO - the French Association for Research on Obesity. This one was held at the medical school, which I think is affiliated with the Sorbonne. The very old desks there were covered with graffiti. The desk I happened to choose was tailor made for Ella, actually. The graffiti read "Vive les Juifs" (long live the Jews) and "J'aime Nutella" (Nutella is the chocolate spread that kids put on bread here). The talks at this conference were also extremely interesting (although slightly harder to follow as they were primarily biomedical). I also presented some of my own research (in French!) which went great. It was an exhausting and challenging day, but I learned a ton and met some nice and interesting other researchers. The AFERO conference continues tomorrow.

Abe also had a busy day. After dropping Jonah off at school, he walked down the hill towards the ile de la cite (a very long walk!) taking photos of the city along the way (he's organizing some of his photos at www.parisphotograph.blogspot.com if you want to see them) . Then, he went to the Pavillion de l'Arsenal. He has been meaning to check this place out for some time as it is the Center of information, documentation, and exhibits of urbanism and architecture of the city of Paris. This was a great place, that I'm sure he will return to often. First he checked out the permanent exhibit which features the history of Paris through urbanism and architecture (using maps, videos, models, etc). Then, he saw the temporary exhibit, which showed about 2 dozen current architecture and urbanism projects in Paris. He said they also have a nice bookstore and a coffee shop (the cheapest cup of cappucino in Paris) with newspapers to read. There is also a whole research section, which he only started to look at.

Ella had a good day except that during gym they were playing un, deux, trois, soleil (like red light, green light), and she bumped her head on the climbing structure. She has a little cut on her head (head cuts always seem so bad, even when they are not really serious). She's glad it was the back of her head and not the front, because tomorrow is school picture day.

Jonah has become a little French talker. Recently, his favorite French words are "voila" and "qu'est-ce c'est" (what is this). His favorite English words are "oy, oy, oy."
